We had all kicked around in music for many years. In bands or
alone.
Writing songs or covering others. We never seemed to get the
idea for whatever reason for all of us to be in the same band until April of
2000. So Driftwood
was formed. Lucy Hill handles the lead female vocals. The phrasing
on her vocals is ultimately natural and her delivery is sublime. Couple this
with a captivating stage presence and Lucy has her half of the Driftwood front
covered. Jimmy Jowell sings the male lead vocals along with Lucy.
Jimmy has a powerful rock voice with nearly perfect pitch, blending backing
harmonies
seamlessly
with Lucy's lead vocals. Jimmy also holds down a variety of other
instruments; piano,
guitar mandolin and harmonica among them. Craig
Higgins is the bassist and the principle creative force behind Driftwood.
Together
with
his Driftwood bandmates, a strong portfolio of over fifty original songs have
been written. While the songs are distinctly Texas, they are universal in
appeal. Driving rhythm and subtle melodic phrases mark Craig's bass playing with
a unique signature. Craig has recorded many lead guitar tracks for
Driftwood as well. Gary Hoover provides the rhythm
guitar with a
distinct no-nonsense precision. He is also is the digital recording
engineer and graphic artist, forging
Driftwood's collective musical creative vision into consumable portions for the
public. Once the core members of Driftwood had gained momentum, the
concept of the band as a co-operative for musically oriented art
was born. As much as a band, Driftwood is a forum for free expression and
a platform for creative musicians and people. Driftwood's interactive
website, along with their new web log
(blog), is evidence of this expansion of
music from sound only to an experience which involves a variety of media.
Jonathan Cleveland, a genuine Texan guitar slinger, can be heard playing
lead guitar on Driftwood recordings. The drum tracks have been laid down
by veteran drummer and soul player Eduardo Siffuentes.
In 2003 Driftwood released their debut CD titled Sweet Corn. While this release may have fallen short of the band's very high expectations for production quality, it laid down a solid foundation for Driftwood to continue to create, produce, and publish music with the highest level of creative integrity. The material on Sweet Corn is a breath of fresh air in an otherwise stagnant industry. All of the music Driftwood has recorded to date is available via the band's website. 2005 marks the release of Driftwood's second CD. More mature in production quality and instrumental execution, Snake Farm is chock full of energy and attitude. In all phases of the creative process, lyrics, artwork, music, collaboration, Driftwood is innovative and its message deserves to be heard.
